Our Story
Founded in 2018, Modular Farms Australia was established to transform traditional farming by addressing the critical challenges of unpredictable climates, shrinking agricultural land, and food security concerns. Recognising that conventional agriculture is heavily dependent on weather conditions and large tracts of land, we sought to develop a resilient, high-efficiency solution that empowers individuals and businesses to grow fresh, nutritious produce in any environment.
With a strong emphasis on innovation and sustainability, we pioneered state-of-the-art modular farming units that optimise plant health while significantly reducing water consumption and environmental impact. Meet the Founder: James Pateras
Raised on a farm in Victoria, James Pateras developed a deep understanding of the agricultural industry’s challenges from an early age. Spending his formative years working alongside his family, he witnessed firsthand the struggles of traditional farming, particularly the devastating impact of droughts on crops and livestock. These experiences shaped his vision for a more sustainable, resilient approach to food production.
James pursued a degree in economics and finance at Deakin University in Geelong, equipping himself with the knowledge to blend business strategy with agricultural innovation. After several years working in the banking sector and traveling to explore agricultural advancements around the world, he recognised an urgent need for technological integration in farming to combat food security challenges.
Driven by his belief that “what has worked for the last 100 years will not suffice for the next 100,” James founded Modular Farms Australia. His mission was clear: to bring scalable, high-yield, and climate-independent farming solutions to the Oceanic region.
By leveraging hydroponics, controlled-environment agriculture, and modular design, he has introduced a revolutionary way to grow fresh, local produce anywhere, at any time of the year.
James remains actively involved in the evolution of sustainable agriculture, collaborating with industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to ensure food security, reduced food miles, and greater self-sufficiency for communities across Australia and beyond.
